I don't know what kind of patterns people are actually looking for. For me, if you give me puppet patterns for building puppets out of foam, I still can't really do anything with it, because I have no experience working with foam. If they are just looking for crafting projects for kids, ultimately they are probably still going to go the sock puppet route.

Scissors, hot glue, metal wires might not be the most dangerous tools and materials out there, but many are still not suitable for kids.

Btw, I like the new design of the site, Naomi.

Hi Kelvin,

I agree, it's kind of tough knowing what some people are searching for. If I check my website stats, sometimes I come up with odd things: like what's a string muppet? I think it's partly to do with the fact that the general public don't know a lot about puppetry overall.

But patterns I think are only half of what's needed: what good is a pattern without also including instructions? I've been trying to make a pattern/instruction set for a muppet, but I get stuck, mainly because it's just so time consuming.

As for making puppets with children in mind, I think for the most part people should avoid using patterns. For one, it's much more fun for kids to make something from scratch; and two it's easier to come up with something for that particular group's skill and interest level on your own. Plus you can make sure you avoid any of those nasty dangerous tools.

... Glad to see that you like the new design of the site. I'm very happy with it; especially the backend upgrade, which works ten times better than the old version. I was a bit worried about colours and fonts, but everyone seems to like it, which is great.

Ok... now to find the next email :)

Cheers,

Naomi
